My name is Hugh Boyd and I am a Freelance Photographer.  This portfolio boasts the best of my work as I document my everyday life.

I started photographing on a small 5 mega pixel camera bought for me Christmas 2005.  From then on I saw the world in a completely different way; I photographed everything from family holidays, to things that caught my eye in my bedroom.  I was eleven years old at this point and very conscious that I put the role as documenter in the family upon myself.  Therefore I made sure things were photographed to look back on, even if my brother and sister questioned me, "why are you taking a picture now in front of this boring thing?!"  It felt mandatory to capture even what people will have thought of as unimportant, but in my head it was ever so crucial.

From then on I took Photography class at school, and eventually studied the subject at University.  In the series of images you see - I take on my digital camera, and film.  The film images are taken on a Hasselblad 503cw medium format camera and shot with Kodak Portra 400, and 160.  Film is a massive part of my Photography life as I fell in love with film imagery admiring the works of photographers such as Joel Meyerowitz, Gregory Crewdson, Rineke Dijkstra, Jeff Wall, Richard Avedon, Laura Pannack, to name a few...

I continue to work with film even though it comes at a price.  Film is perfectly imperfect and its being is not immediately shown, you don't actually know what it looks like.  You hope the light meter reading was enough, your hands were steady, and breath held as the aperture blades clicked into place.  The experience of being out is all you need.  The stillness of creating images like this, and limiting yourself to twelve images on a roll, maybe shooting two - this what I believe to be perfect.
